Cheap MoCap: hardware update

Saturday, February 25, 2012
Hello again. I just installed two of the cameras in a fully functional stereo configuration, and I thought sharing. The modified PS3 Eye have the cylindrical lens cover removed in order for the IR LED board to fit around the lens.

The IR LEDs board was modified: all the LEDs have been bent outwards. This is done because the limited power of the LEDs in conjunction with the narrow LEDs lens results in darker areas near the edges of the image (ie markers near the edges of the image appear less bright). With the new configuration, always an arc of LEDs will emit light towards the direction of each  marker as shown in picture below. So with 5$+2$ for the power converter I have a decent ring light for each camera.
Of course the drawback of the very cheap light is that renders the system impossible to work on a sunny day, even inside a medium lit room.

Next step is calibrating the stereo rig and performing some simple CV algorithms to track two markers in 3-dimensional space...
